Productivity, there’s certainly quite some buzz around it, isn’t it? Especially in 2020, during the lockdown, it’s one of the most talked-about things, and it should be, for all the right reasons. If I’m not wrong, it’s also one of the most sought after traits when hiring personnel for every position. What exactly is productivity, I see you ask. Well, in simple dictionary terms, it’s efficiency, as to, to give you an example, How efficiently can you use your time, resources, capital etc.? And like say, a modern engine, humans too, can easily and drastically improve their productivity within a span of time. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) tuning and a few modifications work wonders for an engine and if you continue reading till the very end, it might just work wonders for you too.
It’s unfair if I don’t add a classic quote on productivity. Here’s an amazing one, one which is so relevant in modern lifestyle.
“Being busy and being productive are two different things”
Well, whoever wrote/said that, Thank you! It’s bang on point. There’s definitely an existential difference between being busy and productive, one that often overlooked and considered to be the same. For example, you could be busy the whole day if you say, are into Netflix. Yup, you’re into something, potentially not available for something else, then technically, you’re busy. But, you have nothing out of that for your good which is just very good if all you want is entertainment. Instead, if you have been watching, say, a webinar or attending a live online workshop that's more useful for you than just entertainment, because you were doing something productive. See the difference, you see what I mean?
Also, we’re human and mistakes are a part of our lives. Don’t be too harsh on yourself. Change takes time and maybe, this one will too, but being consistent is what makes all the difference. For something to perform at the highest level, at its absolute peak, it has to be cared for and looked after with the highest level of diligence. You sow a seed, look after it and let it grow into a tree. Without the initial care, the sapling would be counting its last days. Your brain is very similar. You need to look after it, care for it and then, it’ll automatically start producing results. What we all are often guilty of is criticizing and talking ill about ourselves every time we don’t achieve something we desire. That does more bad than good, over an extent.
So then, if you still think productivity ain’t as important, and that I’m joking ( like Aakhri Pasta ), and that being productive in life is a myth, here are some numbers to back up my claim.
So, let’s get to the business of it. What are the tips that answer “how to be productive in life?”
Ruko zara, Sabar karo ( if you know what I mean 😉 ), we’re getting there.
I have divided these tips into 2 parts. Part 1 lists tips that are easy and require little to no effort. And, Part 2 includes tips that need a bit of an effort from your end, but are amongst the most effective tips there are to be productive in life.
PART 1 - Easy to do tips for better productivity.
1) Shut down for a while :
Sometimes, rather quite some times, especially in today’s modern lifestyle, we are burdened by a lot of things. And an obvious thing to do to reignite the productivity spark within your brain is to shut down for a while. Shut everything down, have some time all to yourself and if you desire some company, ask someone to accompany you. But, all in one, shut yourself down from everything from the external world to experience some internal bliss to kickstart your productive genes. Ah, delicious! An easy and fairly executable answer on how to be productive in life. And yes, did I mention sleep better?
2) Plan and don’t procrastinate :
As you know, research shows that you’re more likely to do things that you write down. Writing is powerful, for reasons more than one. I know planning is boring and not what many folks look forward to, but hey, a genius once said, “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.” Quite right, indeed. Start by planning for a day, then gradually level up. And yeah, did I tell you procrastination is of your worst enemy. Now for procrastination, it’s a huge topic to talk about, probably for another blog. But for now, there’s a ton of videos and blogs on stopping procrastination.
So, plan ahead on a paper, and avoid procrastinating during execution.
3) Appreciate yourself more often :
How often do you reckon you find yourself patting yourself on the back for doing good or in general, giving it all you got. Not very often, I guess. Well, as aforesaid we’re human and who doesn’t love some appreciation for their efforts? People even appreciate their machines for helping them get through. ( Picture Sebastian Vettel bowing to his RB9 after winning the championship at the Indian Grand Prix, 2013 ). Why do you back off then, to appreciate yourself for all you’ve done? Appreciation is a critical answer to “how to be productive in life?”.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking you to defend yourself when you do wrong, or be complacent and never see your mistakes, just that when you know you did or and gave it your all, chin up, and appreciate yourself. Your brain will repay it back by helping you do better next time around.
4) Keep yourself in a good frame of mind :
You’re just one thought away from greatness. And have you ever realised how a single thought while say, you’re in the shower gives rise to a series of thoughts and ideas that just flow as laminarly as it physically could ( pun intended )? That’s it, you just need that one thought to turn it around. And that’ll only happen in a good frame of mind, where the environment is suitable to thrive such thoughts. So try to keep yourself in a happy space, appreciate your efforts, take some time off for yourself and your family and friends and be rest assured, your brain will respond, ideas will flow and you’d have figured out how to be productive in life.
Part 2 - Long term but effective tips on better productivity :
1) Make meditation a part of your routine :
Before you come all guns blazing on how trivial this thing is, let me tell you this. A majority of people underestimate the effectiveness of this simple, yet viciously effective technique. And if it makes it any better, I’m a first-hand witness to stand by the effectiveness of this amazing technique. It’s quite an underrated technique. Believe me, it works wonders. And if you have any doubts over how good an answer this is for how to be productive in life, take out 10 mins for yourself from your Netflix binging time, and try this out.
You don’t have to be a pro, a very simple breathing control would do just fine, to begin with. You can gradually move up in level. There are tons and tons of meditation tutorials online, pick a simple one and get started. Allow yourself to have absolute control, calm things down and create a rich, thriving hotbed for ideas in your mind.
2) Try to learn from every scenario and have a positive outlook :
I admit this is easier said than done. It’d require conscious efforts from your side, but once in the groove, kaboom. Even Admiral general Aladeen wouldn't bother you much ( if you know, you know ). Learning is a constant process. Moreover, if the most excellent and successful on earth are still learning, why do we assume we know all that ever was. That’s a striking difference. Learn to be better. If someone’s doing good, appreciate them and learn a few tricks from them to help you in future, regardless of who that other person is. I believe we all can teach a trick or two to others based on our experience, regardless of the quantity of the same. Of course, highly experienced folks have a lot to offer, no denying that. But that doesn’t imply a rookie can’t offer something too. Have a generally positive outlook on life. What goes around, comes around. Whatever good you do, will come back to you. It’s a matter of being positive.
And soon, you’ll realize you aren’t much bothered by the negativity around you. And regardless of the surroundings, you provide yourself with a positive environment to grow and nurture ideas that automatically increase your productivity. This, by default, allows you to be a couple of steps ahead of your competitors and be productive in life, in general.
So then, by now, you have all you needed to know to answer how to be productive in life. Now, it’s a matter of going out there, applying all that you learned, believing in yourself and rest assured, you’ll create opportunities for yourself and be at a level above where you always wanted to be. Why? you ask. Because you’re a hero, it’s just the matter of believing you are one.
Happy productivity then, peeps 🙂
